Best Affordable Cabernets for New Wine Drinkers

Wines I like to sip

Affordable Cabernets Everyone will Enjoy

Red vs white: the great wine debate. I’m a sucker for a good, deep, large glass of red (and I mean LARGE – check out my glasses), while the other women in my family tend to gravitate towards a nice glass of chardonnay.

For some reason, ever since I started drinking wine, Cabernet Sauvignon has always been what I have gravitated to. Well, after my fabulous underage moscato phase. Experts say that cabs are wines you have to work up to. Sippers should start with a lighter red and work their way to a cab from there. I just jumped right into the deep end, and think you should too.

In today’s article, you are going to learn about:

  • The traits that make a cabernet a cabernet
  • Three cabernets that are perfect for newbies (or as an easy gift when you aren’t sure what someone likes)

Let's sip some wine and talk about it

The Traits of a Cabernet Wine

Cabernet is known for its bold flavor and forwardness. According to Wine Folly, cabernets have five primary flavors. They are black cherry, currant, graphite, cedar, and baking spices. Personally, I prefer the less smoky/graphite filled cabernet. Some people on the other hand prefer it. It’s all about preference.

This wine grouping is the most widely grown throughout the world. I would characterize them as dry, full bodied, and most of the time deep. If you’re looking for a little bit more info, this site has some great details.

The cabernets I am about to talk about all have a few things in common. Most important of these is the price point. All of these wines fall between $9-15. This makes them a great price for anyone a little hesitant in trying a bottle. If you are going to be hosting a little family get together any time soon, these wines are good grab and go options that everyone will enjoy.

Wine #1: Corvelia

Corvelia Wine

Corvelia is actually one of the very first wines I ever blogged about! It costs right at $10 at Trader Joes, and I feel like since I’ve discovered it everyone else has too. Nearly every time I go to the store now it is sold out.

This is a silky smooth option filled with dark fruits, making it a beautiful purple pour. It comes from my favorite region – Paso Robles – and is worth the buy if you can get your hands on it.

Wine #2: Jlohr

Jlohr Paso Robles Wine

If I could only drink one wine for the rest of my life, I think it would be Jlohr. There is just something about its fruity flavor that makes it so enticing. It received a Wine Enthusiast score of 91 last year, so clearly I am not alone in loving it!

Everything from the scent to the sip of this wine is fresh and crisp. The deep berries really stand out in both its scent and taste. This cab also comes from the Paso Robles region.

Wine #3: Substance

Substance Wine Review

Substance (or as I call it – CS) is my most recent discovery on this list. It pairs well with everything, and is delightful, especially for the cost. I discovered it at a party I went to a few years back. Before leaving I asked the bartender what the wine was called. I had to know!

You’ll love this wine for a good date night or as a housewarming gift. It is dense in flavor and tastes like it would cost way more than $15. If you want to learn more about it, click here.
