2022 Fall Capsule Wardrobe: 13 Style Staples for All Season

2022 Fall Capsule Wardrobe: 13 Style Staple Items For Easy Everyday Outfits

Though it may not feel like it here in Texas, fall is finally here! With that comes the shift from swimsuits and sundresses to LAYERS and boots. Today on the blog, I am going to be covering your 2022 fall capsule wardrobe. These are style staple items for easy everyday outfits.

The best part about this post? Majority of my other “style with me” posts for the rest of the season are going to highlight items on this capsule. This means as long as you find items in here that you like and work for your body, you’ll be set for the rest of the season with guides for work, day to day, date nights, and other occasions. How exciting is that?! I’ll be sure to round up all of the posts here that fall into this category so you have a central hub to go back to all season long.

This list includes 13 items, and I will be showing you variations of each piece today so you can find what works best for you, your body, and your personal style.

What is a Capsule Wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe is a collection of clothing you can wear year after year.

I will be trying to link options that work for all price ranges as well so there is absolutely something for everyone. That said, because many items in a capsule wardrobe are items you want to last year to year, these are things that you may want to consider spending a little bit more money on so that they last you a lifetime rather than needing to be replaced next year.

Items You Should Have in Your 2022 Fall Capsule Wardrobe

1 - Trench Coat

The trench coat is such a classic, chic piece for every wardrobe. I love this one that I am wearing because it wasn’t super expensive, but the quality is great. When buying one, you can be assured that it will always be in style or come back in style, so it is worth investing in a nice one if you have the finances in which to do it. They are versatile and such a statement of class.

2 - Neutral Blazer

Nothing makes me quite as happy as finding a solid, well made blazer. I personally have three types in my closet:

  • Standard blazers: what you picture when someone says “blazer” or what everyone cast of any work related movie is wearing
  • Leather blazers: my brown leather blazer is actually one of the first work pieces I ever bought! I got it back in 2013 and I still wear it to this day. This is something that to me is worth the investment.
  • Oversized “boyfriend” blazers: these are my favorite for day to day or to layer over summery outfits to make them more fit for fall.

While I recommend having one of each in your closet, if you are just starting out building your fall capsule wardrobe, it makes sense to buy one in the style you know you will wear the most and work from there!

3 - Leather / Suede Jacket

Having a statement jacket or two allows you to add versatility to your wardrobe through layering. I have both black and white leather jackets, and an olive green suede jacket that are all super comfortable and perfect for making this action happen.

4 - Oversized Poplin Shirt

I have an article already about styling oversized poplin shirts from a few years back, but having one in your wardrobe at this point is essential. They can go with everything. Layer them, wear them to work, dress them for dinner … the possibilities are endless. This type of shirt is what I consider an investment fashion piece because you are going for quality when you buy it, not “fast fashion”.

5 - Black / White Turtleneck / Tee

A good rule of thumb: always have a quality tee in your closet in the colors white, gray, navy, and black. It is also good to have these in the styles short sleeve, long sleeve, and turtleneck. These will be the foundation of your wardrobe and be worn repeatedly throughout all seasons, not just the fall.

6 - Sweater Vest

A good sweater vest is sleeveless, making it an amazing transition piece from the heat into the breezy fall months. It can be worn with shorts when entering the fall, and then used as a (yes, I’m going to use the word again) layer throughout the fall and into the winter.

7 - Sweater Dress

Sweater dresses are such easy items to throw on and accessorize. I now own five in varying colors and styles, and live in them throughout the cold months. Unlike the other items on this list, it is really easy to find affordable ones both at boutiques and large retailers!

8 - Leather Bottoms: shorts / skirt / leggings

Leather bottoms are so versatile. You can pair them with essentially anything and look instantly put together.

I love my leather leggings and would recommend this particular pair / brand a million times over. They hold you in and are thick so they don’t show panty lines or cellulite. I personally wear mine throughout the winter season as well, and to work under a long sweater. They’re under $100 and will quickly become something you wear on repeat.

9 - Straight Leg Jeans

I’m just now jumping on board the straight leg jeans train, but I’m honestly a huge fan. They can be styled to fit your personality and the occasion. Throw on a light wash pair with some distressing for a concert or football game, or a dark wash pair with a turtleneck and blazer for work.

10 - Black Ankle Boots

I LOVE my black ankle boots. When I first got them, I thought they may be a little “edgy” for my typically feminine style. Then I got to playing with them, and they have become one of my favorite buys. I’m getting excited for it to get a little colder here in Texas so I have an excuse to start wearing them again!

11 - Neutral Heel

A good rule of thumb: always have a good neutral heel in your closet, no matter where you live or what you do for work. You never know when you are going to have to pull them out, and you want to make sure when you do have to that they fit well.

12 - Neutral Mule

I repeat what I said above about heels: having a neutral pair of loafers or mules in your closet is always a good idea. Check out my roundup of the best loafers and mules at all price points for some ideas on which pair you want to add to your capsule wardrobe.

13 - Staple Sneaker

Finally (you made it) – a staple sneaker is your final staple item for your fall capsule wardrobe. Notice I said “staple” this time, not neutral. While I firmly believe in a simple pair of mules and heels to occupy your closet, the key to the right staple sneak is comfort and stylability. As long as it goes with things in your closet … go for it! Here is my staple pair for fall. A splurge … but sometimes you just need a little cheetah. If you are ordering that pair (or any pair from this brand) size a half size down.
