Chemises for Sleep: How to Look and Feel More Put Together at the End of the Day
Nothing makes me feel more put together at night time than completing my skincare routine and slipping into a beautiful, silky chemise. Chemises for sleep and hydrated skin… just these two things together make me feel like I have my life in order. You know, a true feeling of *adult* life togetherness.
In today’s article, I’m going to talk about:
- What started my love for chemises in general
- A few facts about chemises
- The first chemises I ever bought / received
- A roundup of best starter chemises (for if you have never bought one)
- Other chemises I am loving right now

What Started my Love for Silky Chemises
I made the change from sleeping in cotton t-shirts to sleeping in chemises a few years ago. Harry (my husband) I had just moved in together. During the Texas summer months, I realized cotton t-shirts were even too thick to sleep in without waking up in a pool of sweat. The search for something lighter started, and, thus, my love affair with a good chemise.
When I told my Mother in Law (Kay) about my love for a good chemise, she got very excited, and started showing me sets that she’s had since she worked at Bloomingdales right out of school. Her motto: as long as you get the quality right, these types of items will last you a lifetime.
Since then, she’s altered some of her and her mother’s personal robe and chemise sets for me to wear when I am over there. What is extra special about this is that Kay’s mother passed in spring 2020. Getting to wear some of her items makes me feel beyond lucky, and gives me a little moment with her every time I put one on.
A Few Facts about Chemises
A lot of people think of chemises as some sort of lingerie that is only worn to be “sexy”. While this can be an intention of them, there are also lots of benefits to wearing chemises. For one, as I mentioned above, they can keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Major win if you live in a state with extreme temps in either direction.
Chemises can also make you feel absolutely beautiful and confident in your own skin. If you find the right fit for your body, it will hug the right curves and make you look beyond amazing.
Lastly – if you are a little bit more daring – they can be worn as a dress with boots and a blazer out and about. I personally don’t do this with mine. That said, I have seen it done before.
My First Ever Chemise
My very first chemise I ever bought was from In Bloom by Jonquil. It was under $50, soft to the touch, and had just enough lace to make it feel unique. There are still some similar styles to mine available (linked here).
The second one I ever owned was a simple one by iCollection in light blue. I now own it in multiple colors, and wear it all the time.

Starter Chemises: the best Chemises for Newbies
Let’s talk about chemises for newbies. If you’ve never bought one before, the process can be a little daunting. I recommend you start with something simple, yet quality. When I say the word “quality”, I’m not telling you to go out and spend hundreds on one. Rather, I am telling you to find a highly rated brand that you can trust.

Chemise Sizing FAQ
How do you get the right fit?
From experience, I would say most chemises run a little short. For reference, I am 5’6 and some brands are too short for me to walk around comfortably in, even just around my house with my husband (that’s why I love sets)! Most brands do have fairly consistent size guidelines, so make sure to check those out. As always, adjustable straps will be your best friend.
What Size Should I Get?
For chemises I always size up at least one size. For example, if the size chart says I’ll be a size small, I will always size up to a medium. This is because I like a little bit more room to breathe when I’m sleeping. I have found most brands size them to be a little bit more fitted.
