Crustacean Chic: How to Style Lobster Print Outfits

Custacean Chic in various fonts and lobster themed clothing items

There’s something wildly charming about lobster print. It makes me feel like I need to be at a sophisticated seaside bake on the coast of Maine or sipping champagne on a sailboat in the cape. Equal parts cheeky and chic, it’s the kind of pattern that makes you smile and earns compliments from strangers in coffee lines.

Today we are going to be exploring this up-and-coming summer print trend (and how to style lobster print outfits) by navigating the waters (lol) of coastal style. We are going to cover

History of the Lobster Print in Fashion

This coastal crustacean didn’t just crawl into our wardrobes out of nowhere this year and demand respect! Surprisingly (to me anyways) lobster print has dignified, stylish roots, and it’s been popping up in fashion circles for nearly a century.

Lobster print made its first major debut on the fashion scene all the way back in 1937 when Italian fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli paired up with surrealist artist Salvador Dalí. The dress featured a bold red lobster splashed across a sleek white silk canvas. It gained notoriety when Wallis Simpson wore it in a Vogue photoshoot by Cecil Beaton, just before her marriage to Edward VIII, making her the Duchess of Windsor.

Since then, the lobster has become a quirky symbol of seaside sophistication with just a dash of eccentricity. It appeared in some novelty prints in the 50s and 60s, but it was Lilly Pulitzer in the 1980s that gave this pattern its push into prep. Lobsters became synonymous with upscale, seaside Americana (hints why I associate it with Cape Cod summers and lighthouses in Maine).

In 2012, Anna Wintour wore a lobster dress to the 2012 Met Gala that made a nod to the OG Schiaparelli dress, which I personally believe restarted the cycle of and thus the re-emergence of the lobster in playful, bright style.

Lobster Print in Fashion Today

Today’s lobster prints feel a little more relaxed—think playful patterns on sundresses, crisp button-downs, and summer-ready sets. They channel that East Coast prep energy, perfect for picnics, beach getaways, or just pretending you’re on a sailboat when you’re really on your lunch break. Styled with espadrilles and oversized sunnies? You’re ready for a beautiful summer day! I love that lobster print doesn’t have to exist strictly on beachwear. It’s the kind of statement piece that works for brunch, work drinks, or anywhere you want to spark a little joy.

Styling Lobster Print

Lobster print walks a fine line between whimsical and whoa, so the key is balance. Let the lobster do the talking by keeping the rest of your look grounded with solids. For example, a printed lobster blouse can be paired with white denim and dainty gold jewelry. I have styled my lobster print gingham maxi (pictured below) multiple ways.

I threw it on under a navy, open face sweater with loafers for the office, with a denim jacket and espadrilles for brunch, and even wore it with a sunhat and sandals as a coverup on a sunny day.

If you’re just dipping your toes into crustacean couture, start small. A silk scarf, a clutch, or a piece of jewelry can add that pop of personality without overcommitting.
