What I Read: My June 2023 Reading List

Welcome to my (very late but better than never) June 2023 reads, ratings, and book reviews! In June, during my move from Dallas back to Fort Worth, a tragic thing happened … I lost my Kindle. It was a very sad period of time for me. Luckily, I recovered it right around the 4th of July, but not soon enough to have any Kindle reads during this month.

June Reads by the Numbers

This month, I  implemented my new “rule” that I need to read at least one nonfiction book a month … and this month started out with a great one!

  • In June, I read a total of four books: three paperbacks, one hardcover
    • One historical fiction
    • One nonfiction
    • Two thrillers
  • I am still on track to reach my goal of 52 books for 2023
  • As of the end of the month, I have read 27 books in 2023

My June 2023 Reads and Reviews

1 - The Last House Guest by Megan Miranda

Avery doesn’t believe that her best friend, Sadie, took her own life. But to what extreme will she go to prove ill intent … and her own innocence?

This was my first Megan Miranda book, and it did NOT disappoint! I loved her writing style, descriptions of the town, and ability to have you questioning what was going to come next. This was a quick read that would be perfect to read by the beach!

2 - Freakonomics by Steven Levett and Stephen Dubner

Why do so many drug dealers still live with their mothers … and how does one become the perfect parent? These are the types of questions answered in this mind blowing book.

I loved this read. It was absolutely crazy how so many aspects in life are intertwined. What fascinated me the most was how often history repeats itself. The book did a solid deep dive on the history of abortion, gun control, and other issues we are dealing with in today’s world. It was so interesting to see how different individuals and cultures have dealt with things over time. This is a must read to add to your list! It’s currently only $1.99 through Kindle!

3 - Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid

How far are people willing to go for the ones they love? August 1983 – the day of superstar Mick Riva’s model and surfer daughter, Nina Riva’s, annual summer rager. There is one rule to the party: if you know about the party, you are invited. Right as things are about to start, a surprise visitor shows up out of nowhere, making Nina ask herself the question … at what point do I start living my life for myself?

This book was the PERFECT summer read. It made me want to go get a tan and listen to the crash of the ocean, cocktail in hand. Highly recommend!!

4 - The Only Survivors by Megan Miranda

I really enjoyed this read! An unreliable narrator, shading crew of characters, and close proximity made it quite the page turner. The reason my rating isn’t higher is because I found there were some major plot holes I couldn’t really fill without stretch. That said, yall know I love Megan Miranda, so I recommend it if you are looking for a quick, fast paced read!
