Favorite Light Wines for Warm Weather
I don’t know about you, but one of my favorite times of the year is late spring. Living in Texas, late spring hints at our impending season of blistering heat. I like to spend as much time as I can during this time of year working outside on my balcony, soaking up fresh air with a glass of light, refreshing wine before summer’s sweet promise of soaking in nothing but sweat. In honor of this, today’s article is going to be a round up of those crisp sips – my favorite light wines for warm weather.
Now I’m not typically a white wine drinker. If you can’t tell from most of my wine posts, I am partial to a good glass of cab. That said, something about the spring breeze or the summer poolside switches gears for me. It feels more respectable to have a nice glass of white wine or rose during the day. Apparently, there is science behind this. The light, crisp nature of white wine leaves you feeling energized and relaxed, unlike a red that is typically heavier. Who knew?
My go to Light Wines
Today’s article includes two roses and two sauvignon blancs all at affordable price points. These are great bottles to bring as hostess gifts, give as birthday gifts, or bring as your contribution to the weekend pool party.
I think the reason I love this wine so much is because it is dry, yet floral. It doesn’t quite hit like your traditional “dry” wine that leaves your mouth in search of water. If you need a poolside companion, or something to serve with a cheese board, this is the perfect pick. So perfect, in fact, that this wine often sells out everywhere. During the summer it becomes nearly impossible to find. If you are interested in trying it or having some on hand, I’d recommend stocking up as soon as possible. I personally will be buying a few bottles next time I run to the liquor store for that exact reason.
The first time I ever tried Matua I was at Target looking for a bottle of Kim Crawford sauv blanc (also included in this article). This man came up behind me and was petting Winston before going, “oh honey, let me save you some money.” He grabbed the Kim Crawford out of my hands and handed me a bottle of Matua. I took his advice, and it has been a favorite of mine ever since.
Now, I will warn you that Matua is hit or miss to people. Some consider it wine’s best kept secret; others find it way too tropical for their pallets. If you are unsure what you like, start with a bottle of Kim Crawford and then try branching out from there. I feel it is the safest option.
As I mentioned above, Kim Crawford is my go to white wine to date. If I’m ever feeling a glass of something but am not in the mood to try something new, this is always the route I go. This wine is so good that it has 4.8 / 5 stars on Drizly, and has an absolute cult following of lovers out there. When I said I enjoy a glass of “crisp” wine in the summer, this is exactly what I am picturing.
I wrote a full article on Rough Day’s cabernet (click here), and the rose is another crowd pleaser. This wine comes from a lesser known region, and was created by two friends / coworkers who shared a love for a good glass at the end of the day. What I love about this rose in particular is the fact it comes in both bottle and canned form. The bottle is perfect for sipping at home on the patio with friends, and the cans are ideal for tossing in a cooler to bring into a “glass free” zone.
I haven’t tried Rough Day!! I’m in Fort Worth and will need to see where I can find it!
