Mastering the Oversized Button Down Shirt Trend
Last updated: October 5, 2022
I bought my first oversized poplin shirt this year, and it was the most basic looking top in existence. It essentially looked like I stole a shirt from my fiance’s work closet and put it on. The only difference? It actually fit me (and looked dang good)!
This classic wardrobe piece has been around for forever, but much like tweed or combat boots, it cycles in and out of fast fashion style. Regardless of common belief, I think that an oversized shirt should be a staple in any woman’s closet, and let me tell you why.
What is an Oversized Poplin Shirt?
Before I go into details on how to style this particular trend, let’s deep dive into what exactly it is. Let the basic vocabulary mastery begin now:
Poplin – the weave of the shirt itself. Poplin is a classic stitching that is high quality and feels good. It also looks crisp when ironed or steamed. If you want to learn more about classic weaves and stitchings, click here.
Oversized – a shirt that is not tight fitting or even considered “too big” for the person wearing it. Unlike if you borrowed a shirt made for someone of the opposite gender and find it is large on you, an “oversized” shirt is made to be too big while also flattering your figure (aka room for boobs/a butt for a woman / shoulders for a man).
Button down – a shirt with buttons from the top to the bottom
All of these features can be mutually exclusive, but for the sake of this article, we are going to assume your shirt has all three of these features, let’s continue.
Different ways to Wear an Oversized Poplin Button Down for Women
The reason an oversized shirt is one of my favorite staples for women? Because it is so versatile. You could wear this shirt every day of the week and nobody worth being friends with would even notice. It is what I consider an investment fashion piece because you are going for quality when you buy it, not “fast fashion”.
How to Style a Woman’s Oversized Shirt
with a sweater vest
Sweater vests are back, and I am here for it. Pull one of these beauties over your oversized blouse. Throw on some jeans and pumps to make the look complete.
Pro hack: when layering the blouse, make sure to pull the hem down so it is balanced around your body. Otherwise you’ll end up looking overstuffed.
as a dress
I threw on a light vest and some over the knee boots the other night and it felt completely natural. You have to make sure your top is long enough, but if it is this is such a fun option. Cold out? Throw on a pair of tights!
with leather leggings
I love my Spanx leather leggings because they go with absolutely everything. Throwing them on with an oversized shirt is no exception to this rule. You can pair with booties and a blazer to dress it up, or combat boots to give the outfit a little more edge.
